Senior Living Ministry

So many of our elder church members who reside in area assisted-living facilities are no longer able to attend their own churches to join in worship.   Through the efforts of many caring volunteers, both clergy and lay people alike, the Broome County Council of Churches provides weekly worship services at the various facilities.          

Volunteers are always welcome and no specific training is necessary, only a desire to share one’s faith and to extend the blessings of your worship community.  The commitment is very flexible.  Some volunteers visit monthly, others once or twice a year.  It may be one individual’s undertaking, or a church may be willing to sponsor a ministry with various members taking turns. 

The service should be non-denominational and last no more than a half hour.  It consists of a Bible reading, an up-lifting reflection, followed by the singing of hymns from the large-print hymnals provided.  Most facilities have a piano available. Volunteers may bring an accompanist with them or lead the singing on their own.  While one person can certainly conduct a service alone, oftentimes church and/or choir members (adult or children) like to participate and are encouraged to attend.
