Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The first ‘Canstruction’ of the Southern Tier event will begin on Sunday. The event will help feed the hungry in Broome County.
Starting at 11 a.m. on March 23, teams will build their “canstructions” in the Oakdale Mall in front of J.C. Penney’s, Burlington Coat Factory, and in Center Court.
The structures will remain in the mall throughout the week to raise awareness of the hunger problem in our area. They will be taken down March 30.
Canstruction is an international hunger-relief competition where architects, engineers and contractors compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food.
All proceeds will benefit the Food Bank of the Southern Tier and the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse (CHOW).
The Food Bank of the Southern Tier and CHOW work in partnership to leverage national, regional, and local resources to end hunger in our community.
The canned food used in each structure will be distributed through CHOW to emergency food programs throughout Broome County including food pantries, soup kitchens, and other community meal programs.
The funds raised will support both agencies’ hunger-relief efforts including the Food Bank’s BackPack Program.
The Southern Tier is joined by 100 cities across North America who will hold Canstruction competitions in the coming year.
