Family Literacy Program

Family Literacy Program

The Family Literacy Program of the Broome County Council of Churches has garnered the accolades of NY State whereby inmates are permitted to read a story to their child into a digital recorder. This recording is transferred to a CD and both the disc and book are sent to their child to keep. The goal of the program is to help the them reconnect with their children as well as to assist the participants in gaining better reading skills, communication skills, parenting skills, and an opportunity to begin a mentoring role. We have also had the opportunity to assist in teaching English as a second language. We are in need of volunteers willing to donate a little of there time to a program which runs for about an hour and a half each week. No experience is necessary- just a love for kids and a passion for helping families. Another exiting part of the Family Literacy Program is part of the Annual Christmas Project. Every year we provide the children of local inmates with Christmas gifts of Children’s books. We are always looking for help with a number of components such as matching kids up with the right books, wrapping the gifts, facilitating the paperwork, delivering the packages and donations.
