The Broome County Council of Churches is planning a move to a larger facility in Conklin, a change leaders say will help expand food distribution efforts through the CHOW program.
The organization plans to relocate from its current Otseningo Street location in Binghamton to a larger site on Powers Road. The new facility is expected to provide roughly twice the storage capacity of the current warehouse, giving CHOW more room to receive and distribute food throughout Broome County.
“The need is in the community,” said CHOW Director Les Aylesworth. “What has happened here over the last few years is because we’re a smallish warehouse. I’ve likened it to driving a car with a one gallon gas tank. You can do it, but it’s really challenging.”
Aylesworth said the larger facility will allow the organization to store more food and better meet the growing demand for assistance. Planning for the move has been underway for several months although a timeline for relocation has not yet been finalized.
