A volunteer organization that helps Broome County senior citizens received a charitable donation ahead of one of its largest events of the year.

Auchinachie Cares presented a $1,000 check to Faith in Action Volunteers, a program at the Broome County Council of Churches that helps seniors in the community stay independent and healthy.

Volunteers help seniors with a variety of tasks, such as running errands like taking them to the doctor or grocery store, or just calling to check in.

Program Director Susan Spencer says they want to help seniors enjoy their lives.

“We provide some different programming to help them get out and see other people and get a little bit of socialization,” said Spencer.

This Thursday is one of the program’s yearly fundraisers, the 19th annual Dining for Dollars Event.

Spencer says the event is already fully booked, but they are always accepting donations and, more importantly, looking for volunteers.

They currently have nearly 100 volunteers serving over 150 clients.
