Friday was the start of “Kids-CAN-Build.”
Nine schools in Broome and Tioga counties at the middle and high school level are participating in the program. Building structures out of cans and displaying them in their schools to win a contest but also donate food to the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse, or CHOW.
Sixth grader at Chenango Forks Middle School Samuel Scofield is part of a team building the “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” His team made a model on a computer to base the structure on.
Scofield said building the structure was very exciting.
“I hear about people doing it all the time and I didn’t think I would actually get to do something through CHOW,” he said. “Now, that I’m here helping, it’s pretty cool.”
A lot of behind-the-scenes work goes into the project for the students. Such as calculating the number of cans needed and what colors they should be.
An award ceremony will be held on March 26 at the Visions Federal Credit Union auditorium for Broome and Tioga students.
