Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The third annual ‘Canstruction’ of the Southern Tier is on display at the Oakdale Mall. Setup for the event took place Sunday, and the showcase will continue through April 10.

The public has the chance to see eleven different displays created by Binghamton businesses. Each structure is built entirely out of canned food to support hunger relief programs in Broome County.

“Everybody I have talked to has just been very excited to see these structures, have said that they’ve been great,” said Steve Theiser, the Broome Leadership Institute ‘Canstruction’ chair. “There’s some really nice structures this year.”

The creative canned food structures are reviewed by a panel of local judges. The winner of the project has the chance to compete on a national level. Additionally, the public can vote for their favorite on the Food Bank’s website, www.foodbankst.org.

This year, some of the structures include a setup from popular Disney Pixar movie Inside Out and a replica of Clifford the Big Red Dog.

“Every can helps to feed the needy in our area, so that’s really where it has gone, teams have just gone bigger and bigger with their structures which is just great,” added Theiser.

All the cans used to make the structures will be donated to hunger relief programs like the Food Bank of the Southern Tier and Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse.

CHOW also has barrels placed throughout the mall where people can bring additional canned foods to donate.
