Our mission is to improve the health of the communities we serve through a values-based, comprehensive, and cost-effective regional health sysem.” Chaplain John Koopman is a 42 year ordained minister with the American Baptist Churches USA. He has been an Institutionally Endorsed Chaplain for 30 years with the ABCUSA. He is also recognized by the United Church of Christ. He is on the staff of the Broome County Council of Churches as Chaplain of Hospital Ministries serving at the UHS Hospitals at Wilson and Binghamton General. He recently completed 15 years as the Coordinating Chaplain at Prison Facilities Camp Georgetown and Camp Pharsalia. Chaplain John has an M.Div and D. Min Certificate from Eastern Baptist Seminary- now named Palmer Seminary. He is a permanently Certified NY State Teacher. He has 2 Army Commendations from his work in the US Army and Reserves. He has 3 Honorable Discharges having served on Active Duty, Reserves and National Guard. Chaplain John earned 4 Units of CPE over the years and is on the CPE Board at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. He is past commander of the American Legion. and the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group, He is chairperson of the NY State Council of Churches Commission on Ministry and Accreditation Committees.

Hospital Ministry

Have you ever felt called to be a volunteer pastoral visitor? Can you make a year commitment of 100 hours? Your duties would be to visit an assigned unit at either Wilson Hospital or Binghamton General Hospital for the purpose of offering the spiritual component to a patient and his or her family.

Our ecumenical team is comprised of chaplains and trained lay volunteers. Would you like to join us?

  • To pray.
  • To sit with them.
  • To validate their feelings.
  • To respond to their concerns.
  • To offer whatever service is appropriate.
  • To serve one-on-one with a diverse group of people whose health range from terminal illness to almost well.
  • To visit with patients and families; listening to their spoken communication and observing their unspoken cues.
